He only wanted to become a farmer. An unremarkable life in Villava, a hamlet near Pamplona. But he never became a farmer. He became the king. El Ray won the Tour de France 5 times in a row, without interruption. He could have won the Tour de France 6 times in a row if he didn’t have to wait for his captain in 1990. From 1991 he didn’t have to wait anymore, as he was captain. He won the Giro d’Italia 2 x, several Classics, smaller tours and became World Champion time-trailing (his speciality).
